Marin qui commença à naviguer très jeune et prit part aux batailles navales de la guerre de Trente Ans. Il passa au service de la Suède en 1643, puis revint en France en 1647.
Il remporta plusieurs victoires sur les Espagnols, les Hollandais (Augusta, 1676) et les pirates barbaresques (Tripoli, 1681; Alger, 1682).
Bien que protestant, il échappa à la proscription au moment de la révocation de l’édit de Nantes en raison de la faveur dont il jouissait auprès du Roi.
