Camille Saint-Saëns
Petit-fils d’un agriculteur Normand et fils d’un fonctionnaire du ministère de l’intérieur, Saint-Saëns est initié au piano par sa tante. Il se révèle un enfant prodige au piano et en composition.
Au cours de sa longue vie il a composé douze opéras (dont le plus connu est Samson et Dalila), cinq symphonies, cinq concertos pour piano, trois pour violon et deux pour violoncelle, des compositions chorales, de la musique de chambre, des pièces pittoresques comme « Le Carnaval des Animaux ».
De retour d’un séjour à Alger, il s’installe à Dieppe (où il considérait être né) et où un musée en son honneur est inauguré de son vivant. L’année de sa mort, en 1921 – il a 86 ans –, il donne un concert au casino de Dieppe pour les 75 ans de ses débuts de pianiste. Il rentre à Alger pour travailler quelques partitions où il décède peu après.
