Bernay s’est développée autour de l’abbaye fondée au 11ème siècle par Judith de Bretagne, femme du duc Richard II.
Au 12ème siècle, un trouvère « Alexandre de Bernay » composa « le Roman d’Alexandre » en vers de 12 syllabes appelés depuis « alexandrins ».

The town of Bernay was built around the old abbey. The abbey was built during the 11th century by Judith, the wife of Duke Richard IInd.
