Paul Cornu
L'un des pionniers de l’hélicoptère avec Bréguet et Oehmichen est un Normand. Le 13 novembre 1907, à Coquainvilliers (Calvados), c’est le premier décollage du « Gyroplane ». Son inventeur, Paul Cornu, est né dans l’Orne en 1881.
Ce fut un inventeur génial, sorte de « Géo-Trouve-Tout » améliorant vélos, tricycles et voiturettes avant de se tourner vers l’aviation.
Il sera tué avec toute se famille en 1944 lors de bombardements de Lisieux par des appareils volants plus lourds que l'air. Cruelle ironie du sort.
Sur le timbre français, l’ancestral « Gyroplane » est représenté en taille réduite dans le coin droit et le nom de l’inventeur n’est même pas mentionné….

One of the pioneers of the helicopter with Breguet and Oehmichen was a Norman. On November,13 1907 at Coquainvilliers (Calvados), the first flight of the "gyroplane" took place. Its inventor, Paul Cornu, was born in 1881 in Orne.
He was a brilliant inventor, a kind of "Geo-WYN," improving bicycles, tricycles and small cars before turning to aviation.
He was killed in 1944 during the bombing of Lisieux. Cruel twist of fate.
