William, from the Bastard to the Conqueror
The death of Edward, in 1066, without any children or direct heir to the throne, created a power vacuum between three competing parties. The first was Harald Hardraada of Norway, a blood relative to the Anglo-Saxon family. The second was William the Bastard, whom the deceased would have designated as heir. The third was the powerful Anglo-Saxon aristocrat, Harold Godwinson, who was elected king in the traditional Anglo-Saxon way by the English Witan.

Having heard that Harold is on the throne, William convened the major Norman barons and convinced them to plan the conquering of the English kingdom. Delayed some weeks by unfavourable winds and adverse weather conditions, the Norman army waited in the bay of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme for a favourable wind. The Norman armada eventually arrived in Pevensey Bay (Sussex) on 28 September 1066, just a few days after Harold's victory over Harald Hardraada and the Norwegians.
