Elles dépendent directement de la Couronne britannique, mais ne font cependant pas partie du Royaume-Uni : elles sont sous la souveraineté du duc de Normandie, titre détenu par la monarchie anglaise depuis la conquête de l'Angleterre par Guillaume le Conquérant après la bataille d'Hastings en 1066. Leur très grande autonomie garantie par ce statut fait que, contrairement au Royaume-Uni, les îles Anglo-Normandes n'entrent pas dans l’Union européenne.
They depend directly on the British Crown, but are not, however, part of the United Kingdom : they are under the sovereignty of the Duke of Normandy, as held by the English monarchy since the conquest of England by William the Conqueror after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Their considerable autonomy guaranteed by this statute mean that, unlike the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands are outside the European Union.
