Bernard de Fontenelle
Le « règne » de Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle dure un siècle à quelques jours près. C’est un écrivain français.
Fils d’un avocat et neveu des Corneille par sa mère, Fontenelle fit de brillantes études chez les jésuites de Rouen, où il laissa le renom d’un « jeune homme parfait sous tous les rapports ». Il entra ensuite au barreau, y plaida une seule cause, la perdit, et vint à Paris, auprès de son oncle maternel Thomas Corneille, débuter dans la littérature.
Par sa longue vie, Fontenelle appartient en même temps au XVIIème et au XVIIIème siècle et forme en quelque sorte le lien entre le grand Siècle et les Lumières. Cependant, malgré sa prudence et sa circonspection, Fontenelle montre déjà, vers la fin du premier, un penchant au goût littéraire et aux préoccupations philosophiques du second.
Fontenelle fut également, avec Le Cornier de Cideville, le cofondateur, le 17 juin 1744, de l’Académie de Rouen, dans sa ville natale.
