Erik le Rouge
Erik le Rouge (en norrois Eiríkr Rauði) (de 950 à 1003 ou de 940 à 1010) était norvégien. Il s'appelait Eirikr Thorvaldson, mais ses contemporains le surnommaient « Le Rouge » parce qu'il était roux. Son histoire nous est connue à travers le récit dit « la Saga d’Eric le Rouge ».
Þorvaldr Ásvaldsson, le père d’Erik le Rouge, fut banni de Norvège à la suite d’un meurtre. Il s’installa au nord-ouest de l’Islande vers l'an 970. Erik le Rouge mena une expédition sur les terres du Groenland qui connaissaient, suite au réchauffement climatique de l’époque, un climat plus favorable que maintenant. Les premiers colons sont 450. Plus tard, leur nombre s’éleva peut-être à 3000, répartis en deux établissements situés tous deux au fond de fjords de la côte ouest .
