Semmes et l'Alabama
Le 11 juin 1864, le CSS Alabama navire de la marine confédérée se présente devant le port de Cherbourg pour y effectuer de grosses réparations et ravitailler. Le consul des Etats-Unis donne aussitôt l'alerte. Une frégate de la marine de l’Union, l' USS Kearsarge se présente.
Le CSS Alabama est finalement autorisé à embarquer du charbon avant d'être raccompagné à la limite des eaux territoriales par le croiseur français La Couronne.
Au cours du combat naval qui oppose alors les deux navires au large du port de Cherbourg, le CSS Alabama démâté et percé de toutes parts, commence à sombrer. La mort dans l'âme, son commandant, Raphael Semmes, fait alors hisser le drapeau blanc.
Vingt-six de ses marins sont morts durant la bataille. Un yacht anglais, le Deerhound, récupère une partie de l'équipage et la plupart des officiers dont le commandant Semmes.
Retourné en Amérique, Raphael Semmes est nommé vice-amiral et continue les combats navals pour les Sudistes. À la fin de la guerre, il sera emprisonné pour actes de piraterie, puis libéré en 1866.
