Stephen = Stephen of Blois, Duke of Normandy (1135 - 1144) and King of England (1135 - 1154). He is the son of Adele, daughter of William the Conqueror.

Stephen = Etienne de Blois, duc de Normandie (1135 – 1144) et roi d’Angleterre (1135 – 1154). Il est le fils d’Adèle, fille de Guillaume le Conquérant.

When Henry 1st died, he had no legitimate male heir. His only son, William Adelin, had perished with much of the Norman noble youth in the sinking of the White Ship on 25 November 1120 near Normandy's Cotentin coast. Although Henry’s barons had sworn allegiance to his daughter Matilda, a long struggle ensued between the latter and Stephen based on the concept that a woman cannot reign and he usurps the throne in his absence.

Lorsque Henri 1er décède, il n’a pas d’héritier mâle légitime, son seul fils Guillaume Adelin ayant péri avec une bonne partie de la jeunesse noble normande dans le naufrage de la Blanche-Nef le 25 novembre 1120 près des côtes normandes du Cotentin. Bien que ses barons aient juré allégeance à sa fille Mathilde, une longue lutte s’engage entre cette dernière et Etienne qui, selon l'idée qu'une femme ne peut régner, usurpe le trône en son absence.

The third brother is missing, Robert II (Courteheuse) who will only be Duke of Normandy (1087-1106). Relations between the three brothers were quite belligerent (see the book by Joseph Fromage : The bastard sons – Anne Carrière editor).

Il manque le troisième frère, Robert II (Courteheuse) qui ne sera que duc de Normandie (1087 – 1106). Les relations entre les trois frères furent assez belliqueuses (voir le livre de Joseph Fromage : Les fils du Bâtard chez Anne Carrière).
