C’est au début du IXème siècle qu’apparurent, en baie de Seine, les premiers Northmen, ou Normands, ces « hommes du Nord » qui donnèrent à cette partie de la Gaule leur nom. Les Vikings, comme on les appelle aussi, étaient surtout des Danois et des Norvégiens.

Un Viking (en vieux norrois, pluriel víkingar) est un explorateur, un commerçant de longue date, particulièrement doué et remarquablement équipé pour cette activité, que la conjoncture a amené à se transformer en pillard ou en guerrier, là où c’était possible, lorsque c’était praticable, mais qui demeurera toujours quelqu’un d’appliqué à « afla sér fjár » (« acquérir des richesses »).
